Overview

A product motion project for Gmail's Gemini integration, enabling voice and natural language inbox search. I designed the full flow motion from voice activation through to result display, and authored the motion spec that engineering built from, covering entry and exit for every state.

Approach

The hardest part was the transition from the Gmail inbox into Gemini search. It had to read as a natural continuation of Gmail, not a separate app taking over, while still having enough presence that users registered something new was happening. Too subtle and the moment gets missed. Too dramatic and it stops feeling like Gmail.

That balance shaped the rest of the flow. Each state needed to feel distinct without breaking the continuity, sitting inside both Gmail's existing UI and Gemini's design system.
