Gmail × Gemini — Voice Search, Google Workspace

Overview

A product motion project for Gmail's Gemini integration — allowing users to search their inbox through voice and natural language. I designed the full end-to-end flow motion, from the moment a user activates voice input through to Gemini's response and result display.

What I did

Owned the end-to-end flow motion across all key states: Voice activation — the transition into voice input mode. Listening state — communicating that the system is actively hearing the user. Gemini response — the moment results appear and the conversation unfolds. Result display — presenting search results within the Gmail interface. The Aurora motion within Gemini's conversational tone was handled by another designer; my focus was the product-level flow connecting each state.

Approach

The motion needed to feel seamless across a multi-step interaction — each state distinct enough to be understood, but fluid enough to feel like one continuous experience. Working within Gmail's existing UI and Gemini's design system, the goal was to make voice feel natural inside a product people use every day.
