New Season Pitch Design
Overview & Challenge
I was responsible for designing style frames for the new season pitch of 'Louie,' my favorite TV series on the FX channel. This project was inspired by the everyday situations the protagonist, Louie, might encounter while walking the streets of New York.
The core challenge of this design was to visually capture 'Louie's' unique black comedy sensibility. Specifically, the focus was on strengthening the program's identity through ordinary yet extraordinary situations set against the backdrop of New York.
Approach & Solution
I developed visual ideas by conceiving concept stories based on my own experiences, which aligned well with the themes of the 'Louie' series.
1. Expressing New York's Irony Through 'Pigeons'
I drew inspiration from observing pigeons in the streets of New York, naturally walking alongside New Yorkers and even waiting for crosswalk signals before crossing. I felt that these pigeons sometimes presented a more 'true New Yorker' image than New Yorkers who often disregard traffic signals. I believed this ironic situation perfectly aligned with the black comedy theme of the 'Louie' series. Based on this experience, I developed designs imagining realistic yet surreal situations Louie might encounter.
2. Proposing Two Contrasting Visual Styles
To encompass the complex emotions of the 'Louie' series, I explored two contrasting style concepts.
Concept 1: Simple Line Drawing This concept applied a minimalist and sophisticated line drawing style inspired by The New Yorker cartoons. I believed this approach was effective in emphasizing the essence of everyday situations and the dry humor of black comedy.
Concept 2: Photography-Based Collage This concept experimented with a photography-based collage style to more richly and multi-layered express Louie's character and situations against realistic New York backdrops. This contributed to creating a more visually impactful and distinctive atmosphere.
Project Outcome
This project presented a strong and original visual direction for the new season pitch of the 'Louie' series. By successfully expressing the black comedic elements found in New York's daily life through two distinct styles, it contributed to highlighting the program's unique identity and enhancing engagement.

1. '비둘기'를 통한 뉴욕의 아이러니 표현
뉴욕의 길거리에서 뉴요커들과 자연스럽게 어울려 걷고, 심지어 횡단보도 신호까지 기다렸다 건너는 비둘기들을 보며 영감을 얻었습니다. 저는 이러한 비둘기들이 때로는 신호조차 무시하는 뉴요커들보다 더 '진정한 뉴요커'의 모습을 보여준다고 생각했고, 이 아이러니한 상황이 블랙 코미디인 '루이' 시리즈의 주제와 완벽하게 부합한다고 판단했습니다. 이 경험을 바탕으로 루이가 겪을 법한 현실적이면서도 비현실적인 상황들을 상상하며 디자인을 전개했습니다.
2. 두 가지 대조적인 시각 스타일 제안
'루이'의 복합적인 감성을 담아내기 위해 두 가지의 대조적인 스타일 컨셉을 시도했습니다.
컨셉 1: 심플한 라인 드로잉 '뉴요커(The New Yorker)' 매거진의 만화에서 영감을 받은 미니멀하고 세련된 라인 드로잉 스타일을 적용했습니다. 이는 일상적인 상황의 본질과 블랙 코미디의 건조한 유머를 강조하는 데 효과적이라고 판단했습니다.
컨셉 2: 사진 기반 콜라주 사진을 기반으로 한 콜라주 스타일을 시도하여, 뉴욕의 현실적인 배경 위에 '루이'의 캐릭터와 상황을 더욱 풍부하고 다층적으로 표현했습니다. 이는 시각적으로 더 강렬하고 독특한 분위기를 연출하는 데 기여합니다.
프로젝트 결과
이 프로젝트는 '루이' 시리즈의 새로운 시즌 피치를 위한 강력하고 독창적인 시각적 방향을 제시했습니다. 뉴욕의 일상 속에서 발견하는 블랙 코미디적 요소를 두 가지 상이한 스타일로 성공적으로 표현함으로써, 프로그램의 독특한 정체성을 부각하고 몰입도를 높이는 데 기여했습니다.

This concept presents photography-based collage designs that reflect black-comedy-like situations I personally experienced on the streets of New York. By combining Louie's character with realistic New York backdrops, the aim was to convey a richer, more humorous and satirical atmosphere.
